UCA and Ojam IP Host Conference on Intellectual Property, Technology, and Innovation
On April 22, 2026, the Faculty of Law of the Pontifical Catholic University of Argentina (UCA) and Ojam IP will hold the Academic Conference “Intellectual Property, Technology and Innovation: The Role of Lawyers in the Digital Era” at the Mons. Derisi Auditorium (Av. Alicia Moreau de Justo 1400, Basement, Buenos Aires), starting at 1:30 PM.
The event, which will be held in person and is free of charge, will bring together leading representatives from the public, private, and academic sectors to discuss the institutional, legal, and professional challenges posed by technological innovation—particularly artificial intelligence—within the intellectual property system and the legal profession.
A Program Focused on Technology and Artificial Intelligence
The conference will be structured around three thematic panels:
• The Intellectual Property System in the Face of Technological Innovation
In an open conversation with Juan Carlos Ojam, partner at Ojam IP, Hernán Rodrigo Cabaleiro Rigamonti, National Director of Trademarks at the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI), will address recent developments in Argentina’s IP system, including changes promoted by INPI, and the institutional challenges posed by technological innovation in the short and medium term.
• Well-Known Trademarks: Use and Territoriality in the Digital Era
Featuring Paula Fernández Pfizenmaier, Head of Intellectual Property and Brand Protection at Mercado Libre, and Octavio Mitelman, associate at Allende & Brea and Director of the Industrial and Intellectual Property Supplement at El Dial.
Moderated by Juan Carlos Ojam, this panel will explore the challenges of trademark notoriety in digital environments, particularly the tension between the principle of territoriality and recognition without a physical local presence.
• The Use of Artificial Intelligence in Law Firms
With presentations by Raquel Mass, Director of Abogados.com.ar and Executive Director of ALTA, and Jorge Garnier, Partner at EY Law, this panel will offer a current perspective on how lawyers—both in law firms, in-house, and independent practitioners—are engaging with AI.
Moderated by Paula Galván, partner at Ojam IP, the panel will focus on how AI is being effectively adopted in legal practice, analyzing resistance, changes in ways of working, and the cultural impact within law firms. It will also include discussion of concrete cases of AI adoption by lawyers and firms.
The institutional opening will be delivered by Dr. Daniel A. Herrera, Dean of the Faculty of Law at UCA, and the closing remarks will be given by Juan Carlos Ojam, who will also present the 2026 edition of the postgraduate program “IP & IT Program. Intellectual Property and Disruptive Technologies: Blockchain, NFTs, e-Gaming and Artificial Intelligence.”
A Reflection Close to World Intellectual Property Day
Taking place just days before World Intellectual Property Day (April 26), the conference provides an opportunity to foster in-depth discussion on the present and future of the field, in a context where technological innovation—particularly artificial intelligence—is challenging traditional legal frameworks.
According to Juan Carlos Ojam, partner at Ojam IP and coordinator of the conference:
“Intellectual property can no longer be considered in isolation from the technological ecosystem. Innovation challenges traditional legal categories and compels us to rethink the lawyer’s role as a strategist in increasingly complex digital environments.”
Paula Galván, partner at Ojam IP and co-coordinator of the conference, added:
“Artificial intelligence is not only a technological or regulatory issue: it is transforming how lawyers work, learn, and make decisions. Understanding this shift is key to practicing law in the coming years.”
